Procedures for Managing Parent Withholding of Consent to Use Student Images
The following information is published in the Student Parent Handbooks in all divisions:
“ISB employees and associates may take or use photographs or other media that include student images, exemplars of student work and/or images of students taking part in a school event or activity. These photographs/media are used to provide ISB families with information about their child(ren)'s education and/or to provide information to other parties about ISB. The images may be published on ISB approved platforms. Parents with concerns or questions should arrange to meet with the relevant divisional principal.”
Principals will meet in person with concerned parents to explain that if they withhold their consent to take or use photos of their child:
Aside from Powerschool and their ID card, there will be no exceptions (no yearbook, no portfolio photos etc.)
We will take every reasonable effort to ensure that there are no photos of their child taken by ISB employees or associates or used at ISB.
The parent(s) and the student will need to play their part to ensure that the student is not photographed (e.g. ensuring that coaches etc. know that there are to be no photos).
There will be some situations in which it is very difficult to ensure that their child is not photographed.
Parents should contact the teacher/principal if they notice a photograph of their child that needs to be removed.
Where students are involved in teams and events with other schools, ISB is unable to control the actions of other schools in their use of media.
If, following this meeting, parents withhold their consent for ISB employees and associates to take or use photographs or other media that include student images, exemplars of student work and/or images of students taking part in a school event or activity, the principal will document their meeting in a letter which will be sent to the parents and a copy placed in the student’s cumulative folder. The principal will activate the “No Photo” alert on Powerschool and inform the relevant teachers, coaches and other extra curricula activity leaders.
