If a student biting incident occurs, a Student Incident Report must be completed.
Counsellor and/or School Administration (for example, ES Principal/Vice Principal) should be notified.
For Students in the Life Centered Education, the LCE teacher should be informed. These staff members are responsible for any disciplinary actions.
Nurse to discuss with Counsellor/School Administration about who will contact parents of any students involved (unless it is a Preschool student in which case the teacher will inform parents involved).
Parents MUST be informed of any biting incidents.
All wounds should be cleaned and have betadine or antibiotic ointment applied to them and be covered with a dressing. Ice should be applied over dressing.
Wounds should be reviewed in the clinic daily until healed
Any wound in which the skin has been broken (any bleeding) should be assessed by Health Coordinator/Head Nurse and dressed
If there is concern of potential blood to blood contact, testing for HIV and Hepatitis C (and Hepatitis B if either the student or victim have not received the 3 doses of vaccine) should be recommended (initial testing and then re test in 3 months). This recommendation should be recorded on the Incident From. If testing is done, the Doctor performing the test should do pre test counselling that is required.
Health Coordinator and Principal/Counsellor to meet with the parents of the child/children involved to discuss HIV and Hepatitis C (+/- Hepatitis B) if they are recommended.
If testing is done, results should be directed to the Health Coordinator and only shared between parties with consent to do so from both parties.
Follow up care to be coordinated by Health Coordinator if required.
